Donald Trump elected president of the United States

Temas:

Republican candidate Donald J. Trump was elected president of the United States Tuesday, defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton in a result that has shocked the country and the world.

Vice President elect-Mike Pence introduced his running mate, who addressed the crowd at 2:50 a.m.

"This is an historic night. The American people have spoken and the American people have elected their new champion," Pence said. "I come to this moment deeply humbled, grateful to God for his amazing grace."

Upon taking the stage, Trump apologized for the late hour.

"Sorry to keep you waiting, complicated business," said the businessman who has never held elected office before.

Hillary Clinton called Trump to concede shortly after the Associated Press called Wisconsin for her opponent, giving him the electoral votes he needed. The Associated Press called the race at about 2:30 a.m.

"She congratulated us, it's about us, on our victory. And I congratulated her on a very hard-fought campaign. She fought very hard, and we owe her a debt of gratitutde for her service to the country," Trump said.

In his speech, he said that he will seek to unite the country.

"We have to bind the wounds of division. It is time for us to come together as one united people. I pledge to every citizen that I will be president for all Americans," Trump said. "I will be reaching out to those who chose not to support me for your help so we can unify the country. This was not a campaign, but a movement made up of millions of hard-working men and women who want a better future for them and their family."

He touted his economic plan, which is focused on cutting taxes and increasing spending on the military and infrastructure.

"Working together, we will begin the urgent task of rebuilding our nation and reviving the American dream. I have gotten to know our country so well, and it has tremendous potential. The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer," he said. "We will rebuild our infrastructure. We will finally take care of our great veterans. We will embark upon a program of growth and economic renewal. I will call upon our best and brightest. We will double our growth and have the strongest economy of any country in the world."

Trump did not mention building a wall on the southern border with Mexico, a frequent highlight of his campaign speeches. Instead, he said he will seek to have favorable relations with other countries.

"While we will always put America's interests first, we will deal fairly with the world," he said.
