The United States Embassy in Panama referred to the prison conditions of former President Ricardo Martinelli, who is being detained in Miami pending the extradition to Panama to face charges of ordering illegal surveillance

"Mr. Martinelli is receiving a good deal and has access to his lawyers," the embassy said in a press release Tuesday after a hearing was concluded before Judge Edwin Torres of the Southern District Court Of Florida.

At that hearing, Martinelli's lawyer, Marcos Jiménez, told the judge that his client was isolated in a cell, completely alone, without television and without visiting rights.

The embassy indicates that the request of extradition that the US prosecutors presented to Judge Torres is at the request of the Panamanian government, "in accordance with the bilateral treaty of extradition between the two countries" dating from 1904.

"As with other sovereign partners around the world, the United States maintains a strong and productive law enforcement relationship with Panama, based on the support of the rule of law," the official bulletin states.

The US embassy warns it will not comment on Martinelli's case, as the issue is a matter for the courts.

"Any comment made by people who are not formal parties to these lawsuits in Miami should be considered mere speculation," it said.

Martinelli was arrested on Monday in Coral Gables by agents of the US Marshals Service.Next Tuesday Judge Torres will hear the arguments of the defense, which is asking for bail for the ex-president.
