Panama seizes 16 tons of cocaine at ports over the last five years

Temas:

Panamanian authorities have unveiled that, during the past five years, a total of 16 tons of cocaine have been seized in different ports in the country thanks to an agreement established with the United Nations.

That program allows the scanning of goods transported in containers through the ports of the world.

Panama ha renewed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc) for three more years.

"We are seeking to protect legal trade and pursue the crime of drug trafficking," said Minister of Security Alexis Bethancourt.

The Panamanian port system, composed of six ports, mobilized some 3.5 million containers between January and July this year, a decrease of 12.4 percent than during the same period of 2015.
