The third anti-corruption prosecutor last night imposed a precautionary measure of pre-trial detention to Porfirio Ellis, the former CD deputy candidate, for allegedly receiving kickbacks from the company Hidalgo & Hidalgo.
That company received the contract to build an irrigation system in Tonosí, Los Santos. it was paid $37 million despite not doing any work on the project.
Ellis was questioned for six hours yesterday after being arrest at Tocumen International Airport while trying to leave the country. He is being detained at the Department of Judicial investigation (DIJ).
Ellis was issued a check for $319,000 from Summer Venture, a company controlled by Felipe "Pipo" Virzi. Virzi received more than $10 million from Hidalgo & Hidalgo, and had admitted to distributing payments to officials associated with the former government. He has named Ellis as being the person who connected him with Hidalgo & Hidalgo.
