To date, the companies that administer the 11 existing quarries pay fees depending on the amount of material that they sell.
Ileana Mosquera, municipal treasurer, said that this practice – endorsed by the previous municipal administration - violates the law of mineral resources, as well as economically affects the municipality.
An operation carried out by the Municipal Treasury identified $100,000 in material whose extraction had not been reported.
The rule - said Mosquera - establishes that companies must report daily to the municipality the amount of cubic metres of material extracted from the quarries.
The official said that it is difficult to account for the economic losses suffered by the municipality due to this mistaken tax practice.
Another issue that is under review is the collection of taxes of companies in Vacamonte that operate sand quarries.
Arraijan Mayor Pedro Sánchez Moro said he is working with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to better regulate the quarries and increase the revenue to the municipality.
