Mariano Rivera ran toward the outfield wall tracking a fly ball as he had hundreds of times before during batting practice.
But this time the result was different. Instead of the ball landing in his glove, Rivera's leg gave out when he took a bad step on the warning track, leaving him twisting in agony on the ground.
"ÃDios mÃo!" said Alex Rodriguez, about 120 meters away.
Mike Harkey, the bullpen coach, was the first to reach the 12-time all star. Manager Joe Girardi had been watching and knew right away the injury was serious.
"By the way in which he fell, the first thing I thought was that he had a broken ligament", said Girardi.
The diagnosis was correct. Rivera suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus on Thursday. It is likely that the injury will end his season and career.
"The situation is not good," said Rivera. "The mental pain is worse than the physical pain. I feel as if I let down my team."
Rivera, 42, said that he is not going to make any decisions about his future right now. Girardi hoped that the all-time saves leader would return, but he understands that retirement is possible.
"At this point, I do not know", Rivera said. "First I have to deal with this. Everything depends on the way in which my rehabilitation is carried out. Then we'll see."
After the game, Rodriguez said the injury was difficult to talk about.
"(Rivera) has meant a lot both for us personally and his importance on the mound," he said. "But, in the end, we are the New York Yankees and nobody is going to feel bad for us."
