Miss Panama readies for Miss Universe finale

18/12/2012 - Only hours remain until the finals of the Miss Universe Pageant, and Miss Panama Stephanie Vander Werf has positioned herself as one of the favorites to make the final, said Miss Panama officials.

Vander Werf has passed the preliminary competitions without any problems, they said.

FILMING

Between rehearsals and filming of videos for the competition, the contestant has had time to share with family, friends and fans.

Vander Werf, meanwhile, has been filming at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino and one of the Trump hotels, in the city of Las Vegas.

She is rooming with Miss Canada, and the two have become friends and have worked out together.

UNION

There are 89 contestants vying for 16 spots in the finals. Latino candidates have spent a lot of time together.

"There is an atmosphere of competition," Miss Mexico Karina González said. "We have made a very nice group, particularly Latinas. I spent time with representatives of Colombia, Bolivia and Chile. We're not pressured to thinking about the results. On the contrary, we are very quiet."

That friendship that has arisen in the Latino group "is super cool" for Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofí­a Esser Quintero.

"It's amazing to see what we have in common despite being so different. We all have the same purpose. We are young and for us it is a dream, a fantasy. We know that it is an important moment and we are always with the best power," she added.

Quintero, a performing arts student, longs to do well for the scholarships.

The 61st wdition of the Miss Universe pageant will be held this Wednesday at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.
