27/12/2012 - The ratification of Ana Belfon as attorney general was published in the Government Gazette today.
The publication noted that resolution No. 24 of December 22, 2012 reflects that the plenary of the National Assembly approved the appointment.
Belfon will replace José Ayú Prado, who was ratified as a judge of the Supreme Court.
CONDUCT
Attorney General Ana Belfon said today that she will come to the Public Ministry without any sort of "prerequisites." In fact, Belfon said that President Ricardo Martinelli has not made him any kind of remarks about how she should conduct herself in office.
"The president, precisely because of the closeness with which we have worked which has been of a professional nature, knows that prerequisites regarding how I should manage the Public Prosecutor's Office would not work," Belfon said.
Belfon will meet with outgoing Attorney General José Ayú Prado. Ayú Prado said this meeting will be to explain to Beflon about outstanding issues.
Belfon will take office on Jan. 2, 2013. She pointed out that its independence is guaranteed and that the media should withhold judgment until 2014 when she finishes, "so that I can be judged by facts and not by what is presumed."
She also said that reforms are needed in the judicial selections process.
