14/07/2012 - The production of commercial milk over the coastal area of Los Santos province has decreased 80 percent.
Around 57 heads of cattle have died due to the lack of water and pasture, representing thousands of dollars in economic losses.
Alexis Bravo, resident of the area, said Santa Ana, El Aromo, Lagartillo, Espinal, Albina Grande and El Cruce are the most affected areas.
Around 25,000 liters of milk per day were produced in previous years during this season; however, only 5,000 liters are currently produced per day.
In front of this situation a technical commission monitors this sector as well as El Corozal, Cedro, Villa Lourdes, Las Cruces and part of Las Guabas neighborhood, where most of the farms have no water.
According to Ministry of Agricultural Development, rural areas of such province have not been able to plant rice because of the climate change affecting the area since last December.
