The rescue efforts to find two members of the Panamanian Red Cross who were lost last night after the collapse of Via Transístmica at the Quebrada Ancha continued today at 11 a.m.
About 150 rescuers were on the scene using heavy equipment to search for the victims.
The victims were identified as Jorge Alemán and Fernando Johnson. They were among six people in a truck which was swept off the road by a landslide. The other four people were able to leap to safety before the truck was buried by the landslide after a drop of 30 feet.
Minister of Public Works Jaime Ford said that the road collapsed due to the heavy rains in the area.
The Cabinet Council will meet today to discuss the situation and to allocate the necessary resources. The council is expected to approve a measure that would allow the government to exceed the limits on debt spending to gai the resources needed for the reconstruction.
