08/10/2012 - The National Assembly approved this afternoon, in less than 10 minutes, modifications to the draft law on copyrights.
The amendments were suggested by President Ricardo Martinelli who based his decision on criticism he received from different sectors of society after the Assembly approved the orginal law. The bill was one of several passed by the Assembly as part of the preparations for the implementation of the free trade agreement with the United States.
Martinelli sent a letter to the National Assembly explaining why he had not sanctioned it and outlining his proposed changes.
These changes were supported by Trade Commission Chairman Raúl Hernández.
The changes related to sums paid for copyright fees and penalties for violating them.
