Firefighters battle blaze in Calidonia

12/07/2013 - A fire heavily damaged a warehouse in Calidonia this afternoon.

The fire started at about 12:30 p.m. in the La Gran Manzana store, which is next to La Flor Panameña bakery. It started in the third floor of the warehouse.

No injuries were reported so far.

About 100 firefighters battled the blaze, as well as a number of rescue workers and pólice officers.

Equipment from the Panama Canal fire department was also brought to the scene.

Firefighters are tryint o contain the blaze to the warehouse. They have evacuated nearby buildings.

FIREFIGHTERS WORK

Fire official Rodrigo Baruco said fighting the fire is difficult due to the contents of the warehouse. He also said they would seek the assistance of wáter and sewer agency Idaan to bring more wáter to the scene.

Idaan Director Abilio Pittí said that the agency is working to increase pressure in the area.

Traffic has been diverted away from the fire to Avenida Peru. Some Metro bus stops were closed in the area.
