Minister of Public Security Jose Raul Mulino announced today that he will continue in his position.
"I have decided to remain in office," said Mulino, who had threatened to resign last week due to differences with National Police Director Gustavo Pérez, who has since been reassigned.
Mulino held a private meeting with President Ricardo Martinelli. He said that support from his friends, politicians, colleagues and even political opponents made him change his mind in relation to his resignation.
Mulino said that: "My resignation accomplished a task of great magnitude, in my opinion," and that it is impossible to do his job without making waves.
"It would be easy, from a political standpoint, to do nothing or do the job halfway well looking for occasional returns," he said. "But I´m not that kind of person."
14/03/2012 - The differences between Mulino and Pérez arose from the minister's decision to create a disciplinary board for security agencies. This was opposed by Pérez, which prompted Mulino to accuse the police director of "disrespecting the democratic institutions of the country."
Julio Moltó was named the new police director on Monday while Pérez was appointed as executive secretary of the Security Council.
