11/02/2013 - Police Traffic Commissioner Aldo Macre said that the agency is considering making the La Chorrera-Arraiján Highway one direction Tuesday to help increase the flow of traffic into Panama City.
He said the change would be made to help with the large amount of traffic expected for the highwayat the close of Carnival, which is widely celebrated in the interior.
About 100,000 vehicles have entered the interior over the last few days for Carnival.
Police have reported a large increase in the number of tickets they have issued for speeding and drunkeness during Carnival as compared to previous years.
Last year during Carnival, 890 speeding tickets were issued, while this year that number has increased to 1,265. Drunk driving arrests have increased from 134 to 331.
Ventura Vega, head of transit agency ATTT, said the numbers are a concern because it shows that more people are acting recklessly. He said accidents have also increases substantially.
His remarks came during a security briefing this morning that also included police, border patrol agency Senafront, civil defense agency Sinaproc and others.
