10/02/2012 - Quijano said that the law would practically eliminate all of the proposed hydroelectric dams in the country.
He added that the proposal would not achieve consensus in the sub-commission that has been discussing the law, which includes himself and another government minister.
Quijano said that the government is willing to discuss the protection of water resources, but that the economic development of the country depends on the expansion of hydro power.
The government would also be willing to set up programs so that money generated by the hydro projects would contribute to a rural program that would benefit indigenous residents. But he added that the government will not allow the Ngäbe Buglé to control the destiny of power production.
