28/12/2011 - Politicians from the Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) and Panameñista Party closed the Pan-American Highway at Divisa today.
Police were on the scene and were planning to use tear gas to disperse the protesters.
The politicians were protesting the policies of President Ricardo Martinelli, who they claim has misused funds from the Social Development Program.
The politicians chanted slogans such as "Mr. President, the neighborhoods should be treated equally."
Jorge Herrera, president of the Asociación de Municipios de Panama, said that the government has handed over funds to politicians from the ruling party while ignoring districts ruled by the opposition.
Herrera said that the protest would continue until the government agreed to meet to discuss the problem.
