21/12/2012 - President Ricardo Martinelli wants to appoint his "personal representative" as attorney general, businessman I. Roberto Eisenmann Jr. said today referring to the appointment of Ana Belfon.
Eisenmann said Belfon is a legal advisor to the president "with a track record that we already know." He recalled that it was Belfon who filed the complaint against journalist Guillermo Sánchez Borbón when he was director of La Prensa.
The employer said that he does not rule out Belfon starting a campaign of persecution "against those who think differently" than the president. He asserted that he already sees this in the prosecution of Balbina Herrera and other leaders of the country's opposition. He clarified, while Belfon may be a good lawyer, "she might have the temptation of persecution."
At the same time, he indicated that, with the appointment of José Ayú Prado as a Supreme Court justice, Martinelli seeks to reinforce the majority of judges in the Supreme Court.
Eisenmann remarked that it seemed that the president wants to cause conflict in the country, which "is sad" because the population wants peace and tranquility.
The appointments of Belfon and Ayú Prado caused a divisive session of the National Assembly's Credentials Committee yesterday. That session is expected to continue this morning.
