There is a growing controversy over the decision by Panama City Mayor Roxana Méndez to cut $7 million in community development funds from the 2013 budget.
Rio Abajo Representative Javier Ortega said that the mayor made those cuts to "suffocate economically" the opposition representatives by preventing projects from being done in their communities.
He said that the mayor has budgeted $2 million for advertising in 2013.
"Out of a $115 million budget, it only offers $54,000 a month for the operation of our community boards," complained Ortega.
He added that even members of Méndez's own party are against the budget.
