Panama City Mayor Roxana Méndez said today that the future of the municipal budget lies in the hands of the council, which will discuss her proposed spending plan next week.
Méndez says she is aware of the opposition to her spending plan, which reduces the amount of money available to members for local projects by $7 million.
She said this was done to allow city officials to consolidate social spending which would result in a more equitable distribution of funds and avoid duplication.
"Everything would be for the benefit of the population," Méndez said.
Political opponents have claimed that Méndez is trying to use the budget for political reasons by cutting off funds to opposition districts.
