19/12/2012 - This afternoon the tunneling machine "Carolina," which is responsible for excavating the north to south line of the Metro subway system, concluded its work..
The machine began its journey on June 4 from Vía Transístmica and ended at Carmen Church on Via España.
"Carolina" concluded its work after digging 2,000,969 meters and placing 1,709 reinforced concrete rings at a depth of between 25 and 30 meters.
STOPS
On Aug. 6, "Carolina" made its first stop at the Via Fernández de Córdoba Station
Her second stop was on Oct. 18 at the Via Argentina station. These works were carried out within the stipulated time.
A total of 129 people of various nationalities worked on the machine, but 80 percent of the labor force was Panamanian.
After completing its work, the machine will give way to "Marta," which is digging the south to north line. It will arrive at the Carmen Church Station in the early months of 2013.
