08/11/2012 - Civil defense agency Sinaproc is waiting for Guatemala to request assistant after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the Central American country yesterday morning and killed more than 50 people.
Panama and Guatemala belong to the Central American System of Integration, which includes disaster assistance.
Sinaproc Director Arturo Alvarado said Panama has dogs available that are trained to find people in rubble after an earthquake. It also has teams that specialize in this area as well.
Sinaproc sent an offer of aid to Guatemala officials through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Guatemala has not yet responded to that offer.
