PRD divided in Assembly

While the party has the most deputies, it is divided into two factions.

"Betrayal" is the word that has been repeated constantly among the members of the PRD caucus in the two days since six of its members defected to thwart a plan to undermine President Juan Carlos Varela's influence over the legislature.

Those six members joined with a coalition of Panameñista, CD, Molirena, Partido Popular and independent deputies to elect Rubén De León, one of the six dissident PRD members, as the leader of the legislature.

That vote meant the defeat of fellow PRD Deputy Crispiano Adames, who was poised to lead a campaign against Varela.

"The PRD was betrayed by six of its members. The PRD is not a person, it is a party," said PRD General Secretary Carlos Pérez Herrera.

Former President Ernesto Pérez Balladares was even more blunt, calling the decision by the six deputies an example of "putting their own interests before that of the party."

He was highly critical of the alliance with the Panameñistas, saying ""It is better to lose with dignity than lowering our heads against such disrespect."

PRD leader Balbina Herrera said a similar situation arose during the government of Mireya Moscoso (1999-2004), when she orchestrated the election of Carlos "Titi" Alvarado to lead the Assembly. She said the party showed its disunity in Wednesday's election.

"The big loser was the PRD, we cannot hide that there is a deep fracture," she said.

Gerardo Solís, who ran as the party's vice president in the last election, said it needs to provide a solid opposition to the policies of Varela, rather than assisting his agenda.

"The PRD is left with a single road: to be a firm opposition," he said. "We already know who the PRD Varelistas are and who the PRDTorrijistas are."

But PRD leader Camilo Alleyne, who is close to former President Martín Torrijos, said that everything is a product of the lack of leadership and commitment to the country shown by the party's current directors.

He said that the leadership that lost the general elections in 2014 insists on staying in power, and that has brought them "a series of irregularities."

"It is a group that has bad political leadership and petty interests which do not display the collective as working for the general good of the country," he argued.

The PRD has an internal election slated for July 12.
