The proposed tolls for the Panama Canal that will go into effect in April 2016 that were released Monday are aimed at encouraging the use of the new locks for larger ships while reducing some rates for ships using the existing locks as compared to rates in 2011.

The Panama Canal Authority said that a container ship carrying 8,000 units (80 percent of its capacity) will pay $780,000 under the proposed tolls. That amount under 2011 rates was $804,000.

According to estimates of the ACP in its Master Plan, the expanded Canal could serve ships carrying up to 13,200 containers and other ships carrying as much as 170,000 tons of cargo.

"The expansion has been very well received by the maritime industry, and today there are ships that have been designed taking into account the dimensions of the expanded Canal," the agency said.

The impact of the expansion will be reflected on a number of sectors. It will allow the transit of large dry bulk carriers and ships carrying liquified natural gas. It is expected to see an increase in ships carrying large loads of grain, coal and iron ore.

The expansion started in September 2007, which includes the construction of two lock complexes that will allow larger ships to use the waterway. This is expected to double the current capacity of the Canal and allow it to handle ships with a length of 1,200 feet (366 m), a berth of 160 feet (49 meters) and a draft of 50 feet (15.24 meters). It is expected to be ready early next year.
