Judge rules Corcione must be tried by Supreme Court

The decision is likely to be appealed.

Sixteenth Criminal Court Judge Enrique Pérez has ruled that Panama CanaL Authority Director Nicolás Corcione must be investigated by the Supreme Court rather than by the Public Prosecutor's Offfice.

The decision was handed down yesterday, prompting Corcione's lawyer, Roberto Moreno, to abandon a petition he filed with the Supreme Court to block the investigation of his client.

If Prosecutor Nahaniel Murgas appeals the decision, it will be heard by the Second Superior Criminal Court. Murgas has already said he plans to appeal.

Corcione is accused of money laundering in a case connected to former Supreme Court Justice Alejandro Moncada Luna, who is serving a five-year sentence for money laundering.

His lawyers have sought to block the investigation by claiming that, as a member of the authority board, their client has protections from being investigated under normal procedures. Instead, any such investigation must be conducted by the Supreme Court under a strict deadline.

Murgas said the decision is not correct.

"In our view, Corcione has no prerogatives as a director of the ACP," Murgas said.

Agreeing with this opinion are Administrative Prosecutor Rigoberto González and the constitutionalist Mario Galindo.

Corcione has been out of the country since the charges against him were announced in July. There have been calls for him to be removed from the board due to his absences.
