President Juan Carlos Varela has dismissed criticism of his administration and said that his government is making progress.

"I don't care about the critics," he said during a ceremony in San Miguelito. "We are bidding projects with transparency for the people. What would concern me is not doing things correctly."

He acknowledged that there is a security problem in the country, as well as issues with public schools. He also said that irregularities in the safe neighborhoods program are being investigated.

"There are a few [homeowners] who behaved badly, and they have been detained," said Varela.

He said projects such as the one he outlined today in San Miguelito, which will be a $100 million expansion of the water system, will help create jobs that are needed in the area. He also said that work will be created when the second line of the Metro gets underway.
