Gunmen Wednesday attacked a confidential witness who has testified against a number of officials involved in alleged acts of corruption connected to the National Assistance Program (PAN).

The vehicle the witness was on was shot at least five times while driving in Albrook. The shots were fired by two men on a motorcycle. The vehicle was bullet-proof, so the inhabitants were not injured.

After the attack, the witness left the country. He had been slated to testify further in the case this week.

"Not only have I received threats, but my family has as well," the witness said in March.

He said these threats came from Rafael Guardia Jaén, a former director of the PAN program who has been implicated by the testimony of the witness.

The witness also complained that the Attorney General's Office withdrew a security detail "without any explanation."

"I have been betrayed by the Attorney General because I was promised security for me and my family," the witness said.

The witness returned to the country to continue testifying in the case when he was promised a bodyguard, but none was provided.

The witness had been slated to testify in a case in which 32 people have been charged, including former presidential private secretary Adolfo De Obarrio, former Comptroller Gioconda Torres de Bianchini, Mario Martinelli, the brother of former President Ricardo Martinelli and Frank De Lima, a former minister of Economy and Finance.

Guardia Jaén has been jailed in the case pending the completion of the investigation.
