Nine years after the privatization of the Alanje sugar refinery, the owners are talking about expanding.
Alejandro Flores, general manager of the Central Azucarera de Alanje (Cadasa), announced an increase of 16% per metric ton in the amount to be paid to cane growers by sugar refineries. The increase benefits dozens of independent farmers who sell the product.
Flores explained that, among other things, "[W]e wanted to reward the producers. . . with the aim of incentivizing them to increase the amount of land under cultivation with sugar cane.
The industry hopes to see a significant increase the years ahead.
